General Concept of the HNES Mission

The Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences (HNES) has interpreted its specific role within the broader contexts of North Dakota State University’s (NDSU) and HDE's (College of Human Development and Education) stated mission of teaching, research, service and outreach as follows:

• Commitment to Teaching, Advising and Learning - HNES values the broadly educated student who exhibits specific competence in a variety of subject content areas and is able to teach those skills to others. Therefore, HNES seeks to provide a student friendly, humanistic, technologically enriched, learning environment that fosters such student's development. HNES is further committed to excellence in instruction, professional preparation, appropriate faculty role models, and quality student advising, and will continue to incorporate research, scholarly, and creative activity into the total learning experience. Through department planning and development, subject matter curriculum assessment, and faculty course evaluation, HNES constantly monitors teaching progress and effectiveness. The entire curriculum is continually improved and updated.

• Commitment to Scholarship and Research - HNES's commitment to balancing quality instruction while enhancing scholarship and creativity is a prime focus. HNES activities, such as publishing and presenting research, reflect the professional productivity and diversity of individual faculty. HNES fosters professional development deepening and boradening competency of the faculty to influence student learning and increase knowledge of the applicable fields of expertise.

• Commitment to Service and Outreach - Service and outreach are functions of land-grant institutions, and HNES supports this commitment through professional service to the campus and surrounding community. HNES is committed to profesional service and outreach through leadership and participation in local, state, national and international groups. Additionally, HNES serves students, faculty and the community through consultation, contractual services, and service-learning.

Summary

HNES offers an extensive program designed to prepare students for careers in athletic training, dietetics, health and physical education, human performance and fitness, and recreational and sport management with a Bachelor of Science degree. Course work and applicable experiences are oriented toward encouraging lifetime participation in wellness related activities. Within HNES students are provided skills to promote and appreciate a healthy lifestyle. A working knowledge of the needs and goals, which determine a person's choice of lifetime activities, is essential for the realization of personal health objectives.
