Students must be accepted into the HNES Graduate Program before they can be considered for a graduate assistantship.
APPOINTMENTS: We offer graduate assistantships for both masters and doctoral students. Graduate assistants seeking a master's degree typically are granted a two-year appointment while students seeking the doctoral degree are granted three-year appointments. Assistantships are renewable on a yearly basis dependent upon student performance.
SALARY RANGE AND BENEFITS: Stipends range from $3,400 to $8,000 and include a tuition waiver worth approximately $5,000. Students are provided shared offices and a desktop computer with internet and email capabilities.
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Middle of Aug until the middle of May.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review for GA's will begin Feb.1 and continue until positions are filled.
PLACEMENT: We place the majority of our GA's on the NDSU campus. However, we do have contractual agreements with Mayville State University, Valley City State University, Concordia College, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and Frappier Acceleration for the placement of Graduate Assistants.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
NDSU - Graduate assistants placed on campus at NDSU may teach fitness activities, wellness courses, concepts of fitness, first aid/CPR, personal and community health, and/or assist with labs. Doctoral GA's will also teach core courses within a specific major, depending upon qualifications and experience. Athletic training graduate assistants will also work with the department of Athletics.
Concordia College - Graduate assistants placed at Concordia college will teach one first aid/CPR course per semester at NDSU and work in the athletic training program at Concordia.
Mayville State University - Graduate assistants placed at Mayville State University will work as assistant coaches with the athletic program. Place contact MSU to learn more about their open positions.
Valley City State University - Graduate assistants placed at Valley City State University will work as assistant coaches with the athletic programs. Place contact MSU to learn more about their open positions.
Blue Cross Blue Shield - Graduate assistants placed at Blue Cross/Blue Shield will work with the Wellness program.
Frappier Acceleration - Graduate assistants placed at Frappier Acceleration will work with the sports training program at the site.
QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate assistants must have an undergraduate degree in the broad areas of health, physical education, sport management, nutrition, dietetics, exercise science, coaching, recreation, etc. Students with a business degree will be considered if they are pursuing the sport and recreation management degree option. A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 is required. Students working with athletic training must have NATA certification at the time of application.
